Air New Zealand will introduce its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the Auckland (AKL) to Perth (PER) route in October 2014. The 787-9 is a stretched version of the Dreamliner, approximately 20 feet longer than the 787-8, and carries roughly 40 more passengers. This extended range and capacity allow Air New Zealand to offer an enhanced onboard product on select long-haul routes.
The cabin layout on the 787-9 includes 18 lie-flat business-class seats arranged in a herringbone configuration, providing direct aisle access and privacy for premium travelers. Premium Economy features 21 seats in a 2-3-2 arrangement, delivering greater comfort on longer sectors. The Economy cabin holds 263 seats and includes 14 rows equipped with Skycouch, a flexible seating option that converts three adjacent economy seats into a flat surface for resting or sleeping.
Air New Zealand has placed an order for ten 787-9 aircraft. The airline planned to introduce the 787-9 on the Auckland–Perth service starting October 15, 2014, with subsequent deployments on other long-haul sectors such as Auckland–Tokyo (HND) and Auckland–Shanghai (PVG). The 787-9’s combination of increased range, fuel efficiency, and a refreshed cabin layout supports Air New Zealand’s network growth and improves passenger experience across its international routes.
The introduction of the 787-9 represents a significant step for Air New Zealand’s long-haul fleet renewal. By incorporating modern amenities like lie-flat seats in business class, an upgraded Premium Economy, and the innovative Skycouch in Economy, the carrier aimed to broaden its appeal to both leisure and business travelers while optimizing capacity and operating efficiency on key trans-Tasman and Asia-Pacific services.
