Charming Boutique Hotel Near Boston’s Historic St. Botolph Street

Arrival/Check-in: On a clear, crisp February afternoon I arrived at The Inn @ St. Botolph in Boston’s Back Bay and went straight to my room. The inn, opened in November 2008, was thoughtfully restored to fit the character of this historic neighborhood. Rather than a traditional staffed front desk, guests receive a secure keyless access code at booking, which provides entry to the building and to rooms. Eliminating a large reception area and permanent desk staff allows the property to offer competitive rates while preserving the services and quality expected of an upscale hotel. Checking out is as simple as closing the door behind you.

Guest Quarters: My suite was tastefully furnished and, more importantly, spotlessly clean. A large bay window brightened the living area with natural light and provided a pleasant view of the neighborhood. The sitting area featured a small couch and a comfortable chair, making it a cozy spot to watch the 42-inch HDTV, read, or relax. A gas fireplace added warmth and a welcoming ambiance. The suite also included a well-equipped kitchenette for guests who prefer to prepare simple meals. The bedroom was spacious and centered around a comfortable four-poster bed; from there it was easy to view the living-room television.

Services/Amenities: The inn’s lounge serves a continental breakfast each morning and doubles as a comfortable retreat where guests can sit by the fireplace, watch television, or read. A guest computer is available in the lounge for those who need it. A compact but well-equipped fitness room with modern cardiovascular machines is on-site for exercising guests. Staff are attentive and helpful while remaining unobtrusive. Concierge services are available via an in-suite phone through the inn’s sister property, XV Beacon, which can assist with tickets, dining reservations, and general recommendations. The inn does not provide valet parking, but there is an affordable public parking garage within walking distance.

The Experience: The Inn @ St. Botolph strikes a smart balance between hotel service and the comfort of a private residence. Guests enjoy the amenities and attention associated with an upscale property while experiencing the relaxed, personal feeling of being at home. The inn’s location places it within easy walking distance of many premier shopping areas, restaurants, and nightlife in Beantown. Boston’s historic attractions are also easily reached on foot or by a short cab or subway ride. On a Saturday night after dinner, I found myself looking forward to returning to my suite—an almost apartment-like comfort that made the stay especially memorable.
