Donegal Airport, situated on Ireland’s northwest coast, has been voted the most scenic airport approach in the world in a recent poll by private jet booking platform PrivateFly.
The poll attracted roughly 8,500 participants and included around 112 nominated airports. Donegal emerged at the top, ahead of Barra Airport in Scotland, Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport in France, and Queenstown Airport in New Zealand.
The rest of the top 10 featured a diverse mix of coastal, city and island approaches. Notable entries included Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport in the Caribbean Netherlands, Orlando Melbourne International Airport in Florida, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport in Canada, London City Airport in the United Kingdom, Princess Juliana International Airport on Sint Maarten, and Miami International Airport.
Voters praised Donegal’s dramatic arrival. One described the approach as flying low over the small terminal building with Errigal mountain’s conical quartzite mass on the right, then sweeping out over an emerald sea where the Wild Atlantic Way breaks into white froth around tiny rocky islands in turquoise water. The pilot reportedly completes a turn and returns toward the crescent of golden sand at Carrickfin Beach, creating a striking coastal panorama before touchdown.
Donegal’s win highlights how landscape and weather can combine to create memorable flight experiences. Approaches that follow coastlines, skirt mountain ridges, or pass over islands and beaches often rank highly in passenger polls because they offer dramatic visuals and a strong sense of place.
