Many Americans plan to treat themselves with their tax refunds — and a large share say they’ll use the extra cash for travel. A recent survey of 1,000 U.S. adults conducted by Travelocity found that nearly 30 percent of respondents would prefer to spend their income tax refund on something indulgent instead of purely practical needs.
When those who favored a splurge were asked what they would choose, 47 percent named a dream vacation as their top pick. The survey suggests a clear preference for experiences over possessions among people who plan to “treat themselves” with a refund.
“Travelocity’s survey reveals that Americans who want to treat themselves with their tax refunds are most interested in travel, clearly demonstrating that people are increasingly placing more value on experiences than on products,” said Brad Wilson, vice president and general manager at Travelocity.
To coincide with the survey results, Travelocity launched a limited-time Tax Day promotion. The three-day special, announced to begin at midnight (EDT) on April 14, offered deals aimed at travelers looking to turn their refunds into a getaway.
