IHG Launches Renovation Donation Program to Support Communities

InterContinental Hotels Group has launched the Renovation Donation Initiative, a reuse program focused on social responsibility and community impact. As IHG-branded hotels undergo renovations, usable furniture and other fixtures are collected and redirected to local nonprofit organizations. Early partners and recipients include United Way Worldwide and Good360.

The program is rolling out across many IHG properties in North America, including Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites locations. By coordinating donations from renovation projects, IHG aims to reduce waste, extend the life of goods and provide tangible support to communities.

IHG estimates that a typical remodel of a 100-guestroom hotel can generate substantial donations: more than 100 televisions, roughly 150 bed frames, about 200 mirrors and around 500 light fixtures. In addition to furnishings, carpeting in that scenario can total approximately 22,500 square feet of material that can be repurposed rather than discarded.

“Responsible business is core to providing True Hospitality for everyone — we’re delivering a true win-win for our owners and the communities in which we operate with the support of these non-profit organizations. This initiative further strengthens our commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement,” said Elie Maalouf, CEO, Americas, IHG.

Don Berg, CEO of the IHG Owners Association, noted the owners’ strong interest in the program: “Our members have shown tremendous interest in the potential impact of this effort. Through the Renovation Donation Initiative, we’re providing another way for owners to deepen the positive impact they make in their communities.” He emphasized that the program offers property owners a practical option to support local needs while reducing landfill contributions.

By pairing renovation schedules with nonprofit partners, the initiative streamlines the donation process, ensuring items are inspected, sorted and redirected efficiently. This approach helps nonprofits obtain useful goods for community programs, shelters and other services while helping hotels manage renovation logistics responsibly.

The Renovation Donation Initiative complements other sustainability measures by IHG, reinforcing a broader commitment to reduce environmental impact through reuse and circular practices. By diverting large volumes of usable hotel furnishings from disposal, the program supports resource conservation and offers cost-effective resources to community organizations.

Overall, the initiative is designed to benefit three groups: hotel owners who can reduce disposal costs and support community engagement, nonprofits that receive needed items, and local communities that gain access to usable goods. As more properties participate, IHG expects the program to expand the reach and frequency of donations, increasing the social and environmental benefits realized by these coordinated efforts.
