I was still getting re-accustomed to walking on solid ground as I took my first step into the refreshingly cool waters of the Waiea (“Water of Life”) stream that winds through the open-air gardens at the Hualālai Spa. The multitextured pebbles massaged my feet with each step, anchoring me after an active hour on the resort’s rock-climbing wall.
Earlier I had scaled the Four Seasons Resort Hualālai’s climbing wall, wearing yoga attire as my private instructor guided me through a choreographed sequence of poses and climbing techniques. The resort calls this new fitness offering Beyond Bouldering, or Wall Climbing Yoga. The sensory path through the lush gardens served as a deliberate, grounding transition from exertion to relaxation. I swapped spandex for reusable rubber slippers and an airy yukata robe, feeling a cool breeze as I moved toward the spa’s Apothecary and the gentle airflow through the robe’s natural fibers.
The Apothecary pays homage to the kupuna, Hawai’ian elders who preserved the traditional uses of local plants and materials for remedies and nurturing treatments. It serves as the central repository for the ingredients used in the spa’s signature scrubs, wraps and body treatments. I was welcomed with a cup of herbal tea and a warm smile at a wooden apothecary table, where a spa concierge guided me through more than 40 ingredients displayed in bell jars and containers—20 of them locally sourced and all made from 100 percent natural plant and mineral resources.
Guests are invited to customize their own blends to complement massages, scrubs and wraps. The ingredient selection highlights Hawai’ian offerings such as Molokai pa’akai (sea salt), Maui organic turbinado sugar and Kona spirulina. Many components could just as well appear on the resort’s dining menus: crushed macadamia nuts and lemon salts for exfoliation; organic coconut milk and local honey to restore hydration to jet-lagged skin; and jars of food-grade mud, clay and organic hibiscus buds that lend authentic island elements to treatments.
I chose the Hulali Apothecary Treatment (80 minutes). Named for the Hawai’ian word for “sparkle,” this customized body polish leaves the skin radiant. I selected native oils, herbs and flowers to create a fragrant scrub composed of eleven different elements. My therapist blended the ingredients before my eyes, then led me to a private treatment room to begin the transformation toward luminous skin.

Apothecary offerings are only part of the spa’s eco-friendly program. The Apothecary Mud & Clay Mosaic Treatment (80 minutes) uses volcanic mud and deep-sea clay to create a wrap that tones and stimulates the skin. The Wawali Apothecary Treatment (80 minutes) blends indigenous ingredients into a body mask and wrap while the therapist performs a face, neck and scalp massage. For a longer ritual, the Linohau Apothecary Treatment (120 minutes) combines the Hulali scrub with the Wawali mask and wrap for a comprehensive, indulgent experience.
The spa occupies 28,000 square feet and showcases carefully curated eco-design elements selected by designers Babey Moulton Jue & Booth. Treatments can be enjoyed indoors or outdoors; outdoor sessions take place in thatch-roofed privacy hales, creating an intimate, natural setting for relaxation.
Local and natural ingredients are central to the spa’s signature therapies. The Polynesian Niu Scrub features fresh, local coconut, while the Hualālai Island Stone Massage uses hot and cold stones placed above and below the body to balance energy centers and promote circulation. The menu includes more than 15 massage therapies—including traditional lomi-lomi—over eight body treatments, several water cures that combine skin brushing with scalp and foot massages and herb-infused baths, and more than 15 skin rituals and facial enhancements.
Specialist therapists provide acupuncture, yoga therapy and physical therapy for tailored treatments, and a full-service salon offers hair, nails and makeup services. Indoor and outdoor showers reinforce the connection to nature, and products in the men’s and women’s lounges are 100 percent natural, developed by L’Oeil du Vert for the hotel’s exclusive Kāwili Project.
