British Airways has confirmed that, starting in January, its short-haul buy-on-board service will provide cups only for beverages purchased in-flight, while drinking water will be available on request. All food and drink—including soft drinks, tea, and coffee—will be chargeable.
Passengers will no longer be able to avoid paying by requesting hot water alone. If a customer requests a cup for tea, the retail price of the item will apply regardless of whether a tea bag is included.
“We know our customers expect a great experience with British Airways,” said Alex Cruz, chief executive officer of British Airways. “They’ve told us we are experts in flying and service, but when it comes to catering on short-haul flights, they want a wider range of premium products. Like British Airways, Marks and Spencer is a well-known, premium British brand that is respected and trusted, so it’s an ideal partnership, providing our customers with a choice of products they recognize and value. I firmly believe what we are delivering breaks the mold and sets a new standard in short-haul catering. We will be providing a selection of premium brand, fresh food options and a menu that will be refreshed on a quarterly basis.”
The change will take effect on all short-haul flights departing London Heathrow (LHR) and London Gatwick (LGW) from Jan. 11, 2017, and will be extended to London City (LCY) and London Stansted (STN) flights by summer 2017.
