Etihad Expands Flights to Melbourne: More Seats & Schedules

Etihad Airways has increased capacity on its Abu Dhabi (AUH) to Melbourne (MEL) route by deploying larger aircraft to meet rising demand from Australia. The airline introduced a 328-seat Boeing 777-300ER configured in three classes, replacing the Airbus A340-600 on this service and adding 36 seats overall.

Etihad’s move responds to consistently strong performance on the Melbourne–Abu Dhabi sector. According to the carrier, load factors on the route have averaged above 80 percent this year, prompting the change to the 777-300ER. The new aircraft delivers approximately 12 percent more seats in total and a 25 percent increase in business class capacity, allowing Etihad to serve a larger share of both corporate and leisure travelers between Australia and Abu Dhabi, as well as onward connections across its global network.

The Boeing 777-300ER offers a modern three-class layout that balances economy, premium economy (where applicable), and business cabins to accommodate diverse passenger needs. The increase in business class seats makes the route especially attractive to corporate customers and premium leisure travelers, while the overall capacity boost helps meet peak-season demand and improves connectivity for passengers flying beyond Abu Dhabi.

By reallocating a higher-capacity aircraft to the Melbourne route, Etihad can better match supply to market demand, reduce the likelihood of waitlists on popular flights, and offer more options for passengers seeking flexible schedules and onward connections through its hub. The decision also reflects broader trends in airline route planning, where carriers deploy larger aircraft on high-demand city pairs to maximize revenue and optimize fleet utilization.

For travelers, the change means more available seats and potentially improved availability in premium cabins. Business passengers can expect increased options on direct services, while leisure travelers benefit from expanded capacity and more choices for trip timing. Etihad’s adjustment underlines the airline’s focus on strengthening its presence in the Australia–Middle East market and enhancing service for customers connecting to its worldwide network.
