Hawaiian Airlines has updated its checked baggage pricing for flights between North America and Hawai‘i. The new fees apply to main cabin tickets purchased on or after November 12.
Under the revised policy, the fee for the first checked bag increases from $25 to $30. The cost for the second checked bag rises from $35 to $40. These adjustments reflect the airline’s latest pricing for standard main cabin checked luggage on routes between the continental U.S., Canada, and Hawai‘i.
Importantly, checked bag fees for flights between the Hawaiian Islands (neighbor island flights) remain unchanged. HawaiianMiles members continue to receive the same discounts and complimentary baggage allowances they had prior to this pricing update. International itineraries also retain their existing benefit: travelers on international flights to and from Hawai‘i still receive two checked bags at no additional charge, consistent with the carrier’s international baggage policy.
Cardholder benefits tied to the Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard remain in place for qualifying purchases. Cardholders who buy tickets directly from Hawaiian Airlines with that card for travel between Hawai‘i and any of the airline’s 12 North American gateway cities will still receive one complimentary first checked bag. This benefit applies only when tickets are purchased directly from the airline rather than through third-party sellers.
The change affects main cabin fares specifically, so it’s important for travelers to review their ticket type and baggage entitlements before purchase. Passengers traveling with larger or multiple bags should consider the updated fees when planning packing and budgeting for their trip. Paying attention to how tickets are purchased—directly from the airline or via a third-party agent—can also influence whether certain baggage benefits apply, especially for cardholders who rely on the complimentary first-bag privilege.
Hawaiian Airlines’ adjustment to checked baggage fees is part of broader industry trends in which carriers periodically update ancillary fees to reflect operating costs and service changes. Travelers planning trips between the continental U.S., Canada, and Hawai‘i should factor the new $30 first-bag and $40 second-bag fees into their travel budgets, or evaluate alternative options such as carry-on packing, consolidating luggage, or selecting fare products that include checked baggage.
If you are a frequent traveler to Hawai‘i, check your HawaiianMiles status and the terms of any co-branded credit cards you hold before booking. Maintaining awareness of baggage rules and cardholder protections helps avoid surprises at the airport and ensures you take advantage of any complimentary allowances or discounts that apply to your itinerary.
