Zipcar Study Reveals How Americans Drive During Summer

Last month, car-sharing network Zipcar published the results of its American Summertime Driving survey, and the findings confirm what many already suspected: Americans still love summer road trips. The survey highlights preferred companions, vehicle choices, and seasonal driving habits that shape how people spend time on the road during warmer months.

When it comes to travel companions, family remains the top choice. Thirty-three percent of respondents said they most enjoy driving with family on vacation. Friends come next at 19 percent, while 18 percent prefer solo morning drives. Thirteen percent said they favor a sunset drive, reflecting a continued appreciation for simple, scenic moments behind the wheel.

Vehicle preference varied by destination. Although beaches are a classic summer lure, 41 percent of survey participants said they would choose an SUV for trips to the woods or mountains. Just 32 percent would pick a convertible for a beach or lake visit. More specialized choices were smaller: 14 percent would select a luxury car for urban cruising, and 12 percent would opt for a compact car to explore city streets.

The survey also explored everyday habits such as window use. More than a quarter of respondents (over 25 percent) said they keep their windows down year-round, while 20 percent keep their windows up all year. The remainder reported adjusting window position based on the weather, indicating a mix of comfort preferences and practical responses to changing conditions.

Gender differences emerged in route and scenery preferences. Thirty-five percent of men said they enjoy driving along back roads with no set destination, embracing a spontaneous, exploratory approach. In contrast, 34 percent of women indicated a preference for drives along the beach, favoring coastal scenery and the rhythm of shoreline routes.

These results offer a snapshot of American summer driving culture—how people choose companions, vehicles, and routes—and underline a continued enthusiasm for road travel across age groups and regions. For those planning summer trips, the survey suggests many will prioritize scenic routes, vehicle comfort suited to their destination, and company that enhances the journey.
