Newark Terminal One Expansion: What Travelers Need to Know

Plans for Newark Liberty International Airport’s new terminal are moving forward after the Port Authority approved design and construction vendors for the project. The redevelopment will replace the aging Terminal A with a modern, efficient domestic terminal designed to enhance the passenger experience and accommodate future growth.

The planned terminal will span approximately 1,000,000 square feet and include 33 gates. It is designed to streamline passenger flow, reduce wait times, and offer a range of contemporary amenities and services expected in a 21st-century airport. The project also includes additional parking capacity for 3,000 vehicles to meet increasing demand.

Officials point to steady passenger growth as a driving factor behind the redevelopment. “There has been a continuous surge in the number of passengers at Newark Liberty, which last year welcomed more than 40 million of them,” said Kevin O’Toole, chairman of the Port Authority. “This board action advances our commitment to address the growing needs of our travelers, which cannot be adequately met by the current Terminal A.”

Funding for the airport modernization program is a major priority. “Nearly $12 billion in our current 10-year capital plan is committed to modernizing our airports,” said Jeffrey Lynford, vice-chairman of the Port Authority. “We move toward the next phase of the Terminal One redevelopment project to deliver a world-class terminal with 21st-century passenger amenities.”

The Port Authority approved approximately $1.85 billion in construction contracts and related expenditures for the new terminal building, bringing the total estimated project cost to $2.7 billion. This investment is expected to produce significant regional benefits beyond improved airport facilities.

Economic impact studies indicate the redevelopment will generate an estimated $4.6 billion in regional economic activity and support more than 23,000 jobs across construction and related sectors. The project is also projected to deliver over $1.9 billion in wages to the local economy, reinforcing the broader financial benefits of the terminal modernization.

Construction timelines set the terminal to open in 2021, with full operations targeted for 2022. Once complete, the new facility aims to provide travelers with improved circulation, enhanced retail and dining options, upgraded technology and security features, and expanded gates that better accommodate domestic flight operations and future growth.

By replacing the outdated Terminal A with a larger, more flexible Terminal One, Newark Liberty International Airport will be better positioned to serve rising passenger volumes while advancing regional transportation infrastructure and economic development goals.
