It would be hard to find a cruise line more family-focused than Disney Cruise Line, yet even on Disney’s ships adults can find plenty of kid-free spaces and activities. Each of Disney’s four vessels includes areas where only adults are welcome, open from morning until night. The Quiet Cove offers an adults-only pool, hot tub and a poolside bar, and an adjacent sundeck provides a quiet area for sunbathing. Disney’s upscale restaurants Remy and Palo are reserved for adults, and the Senses Spa & Salon delivers a full menu of treatments plus a thermal suite with a sauna, whirlpools and heated ceramic loungers. Sailings typically include mixology and tasting classes and shore excursions that exclude children, and in the Caribbean Disney’s private island features an adults-only beach with cabanas, a bar and a barbecue buffet. Onboard nightlife is concentrated in The District, an adults-only corridor of pubs, cocktail bars and nightclubs for guests aged 18 and over.

Disney is not the only line offering adults-only spaces on mainstream ships. Norwegian Cruise Line’s The Haven is a ship-within-a-ship enclave that provides private concierges, around-the-clock butlers, a sundeck, lounge, restaurant and staterooms reserved for guests 18 and older. Celebrity Cruises operates The Retreat, an 18-plus sanctuary with personal butlers, a private restaurant, a dedicated pool area and an exclusive lounge. Royal Caribbean’s The Solarium offers adults private hot tubs, a pool and a full bar under a glass canopy. Princess Cruises runs The Sanctuary, a quiet adults-only area, and Seabourn’s Encore and Ovation offer rentable day retreats—complete with a hot tub, bar and private cabanas. Seabourn’s cabanas are lavishly appointed and include amenities such as a stocked minibar, lunch service and afternoon tea delivery.
Adults-only zones on conventional cruise ships are popular, but they occupy only portions of the vessel. For travelers seeking an entirely adult-focused cruise experience, a smaller number of lines operate ships or entire fleets that exclude children.
Viking Ocean Cruises has built its brand around an adults-only policy: its ocean ships, each carrying about 930 passengers, are restricted to guests 18 and older. Viking has extended that policy to many of its river ships as well, and its onboard programming does not include facilities or activities for infants, children or teenagers.

Virgin Voyages, a recent entrant in the cruise market, also prohibits passengers under 18. When operations began, Virgin positioned its ships as “adult by design,” focusing on a relaxed, upscale resort atmosphere without children on board. The Scarlet Lady and sister ships feature a broad choice of restaurants, long hours for dining, Champagne on demand, various suite categories, nightlife areas like karaoke and DJ spaces, outdoor fitness options such as yoga and jogging tracks, a boxing ring, a full-service spa and unique offerings like an onboard tattoo parlor. Virgin’s approach mixes active and relaxing pursuits with an all-inclusive style meant to appeal to grown-up travelers seeking social, culinary and wellness experiences without family-focused programming.
Several British-based cruise lines have also introduced adults-only or age-restricted ships for travelers who prefer a quieter, child-free environment. P&O Cruises operates two adults-only ships, Aurora and Arcadia, both aimed at guests 18 and older. Marella Cruises launched the Marella Explorer 2 as an adults-only vessel welcoming passengers aged 18 and up. Saga Cruises takes a different approach with a higher threshold: its Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure set a minimum passenger age of 50, catering to older adults seeking a more traditional, relaxed cruise environment.
These British offerings tend to attract mostly U.K.-based travelers and display a more traditional onboard atmosphere, with formal evenings and activities like ballroom dancing and shuffleboard alongside contemporary cruise amenities. For travelers who want to avoid the distractions and logistics that families can bring, adults-only ships and dedicated adult areas provide a range of options—from secluded sun decks and private lounges on mainstream lines to fully child-free ships designed specifically for adult guests.
