Arrival/Check-In: Pulling up to a Fifth Avenue address never loses its appeal. After a smooth drive from Boston—aside from the last 10 miles on the FDR Drive and the cross-town approach to Fifth Avenue—my sister Nancy and I were greeted promptly and courteously at Langham Place, Fifth Avenue. Our bags were taken care of, the car was whisked to valet, and staff escorted us to a beautiful residence suite with warm, efficient service from the moment we arrived.
Guest Quarters: Over years of travel I’ve found that a discreet corner door often hides the most impressive hotel rooms, and this suite was no exception. The bellman opened the door to a corner residence with floor-to-ceiling windows that framed a wide view of the city. A short entryway with a guest powder room opened into a generous living area and a well-equipped kitchenette with Miele appliances. The suite’s neutral palette and thoughtfully chosen furnishings—a comfortable sofa, three chairs, a square coffee table and a flat-screen television set into a bookshelf—created a calm, inviting living space. Natural light streamed in through the large windows, bathing the room in a pleasant afternoon glow.
The bedroom was separate and featured a king-size bed dressed in Pratesi linens, a cozy sitting nook, a practical desk and an entire wall of closets. A short corridor, where a washer/dryer was neatly tucked behind closet doors, led to an expansive bathroom with a deep soaking tub, a separate glass shower, a private water closet and a double vanity. A television built into the mirror added a modern touch. The standout feature remained the floor-to-ceiling windows across much of the exterior wall, fitted with easy-to-operate privacy screens and blinds that balanced openness with seclusion.
Services/Amenities: Our stay was short—just one night—but the level of service left a strong impression. As guests in a residence suite we had access to a personal assistant, complimentary Wi-Fi, bottled water and soft drinks, and five items of pressing service upon arrival. There were plenty of amenities to enjoy if time had allowed.
We hoped to try treatments at the Langham Place Spa and to relax with cocktails in Measure Lounge, and we managed a quick peek into Ai Fiori, the Michelin-recognized restaurant from the Alta Marea Group, which is firmly on our list for a return visit. The hotel also houses a well-equipped fitness center, the Julien Farel Salon, and offers a house car service for convenient drop-offs.
The Experience: Langham Place, Fifth Avenue feels like a home away from home—only more polished. The combination of residential-style suites, attentive service and thoughtful amenities make it an excellent choice for travelers seeking a comfortable, upscale base in Manhattan.
