United Airlines has raised its checked bag fees, joining other carriers such as JetBlue, Air Canada and WestJet that recently increased similar charges. The airline’s new pricing sets the fee for the first checked bag at $30, up from $25, while the second checked bag now costs $40, up from $35.
For passengers on cross-border flights to Canada, the charge for checking a bag is now $50.
“As we continue to make investments that make travel on United better, we are making adjustments to our checked bag fees in select markets — most of which have not been changed for the past eight years,” a United spokesperson told Bloomberg News. The airline says the fee adjustments help support ongoing investments in the customer experience.
Airlines commonly point to rising operating costs, including fuel and labor, when adjusting ancillary fees. Industry observers expect other major carriers, including Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, to consider similar increases. At this time, Southwest remains the only major U.S. carrier that has not implemented higher checked baggage fees.
For travelers, these changes underscore the importance of checking baggage policies and fees before booking. Depending on fare class, loyalty status, and route, some passengers may still qualify for complimentary checked bags. Others may find it more cost-effective to travel with carry-on luggage only or purchase an upgraded fare that includes baggage allowances.
When comparing options, consider the total door-to-door cost: ticket price, ancillary fees, and any potential savings from loyalty benefits or bundled fares. Monitoring airline announcements and reviewing the terms at booking can help avoid surprises at the airport and make travel budgeting more predictable.
