Cycle Scotland: Ride to the Edge for Unforgettable Adventure

Last year, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Aug. 5–29) in Scotland featured 50,459 performances across 313 venues. If you want to combine an active adventure with world-class arts and entertainment, H+I Adventures now offers a Coast-to-Coast Scotland mountain biking trip that concludes in time to enjoy the Fringe in Edinburgh. The advanced-level excursion runs eight days and seven nights, taking you through some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Highlands before finishing in the capital.

The route starts at Bonar Bridge and travels west through glens and technical single-track into Ullapool. Riders continue through remote, scenic terrain toward Poolewe, passing by Loch Maree and tackling rocky trails in the mountains of Torridon. The picturesque fishing hamlet of Shieldaig is another highlight. The itinerary emphasizes challenging mountain biking on varied surfaces, with plenty of opportunities to take in lochs, coastal views, and rugged highland scenery.

After the final ride, you can switch gears from outdoor exertion to cultural immersion. During the Fringe, virtually the whole city of Edinburgh becomes a performance space, with a vast program of music, comedy, theater, spoken word, and experimental pieces across hundreds of venues. Traditional locations and unique settings alike host shows, ranging from established stages to pop-up performances in unexpected corners of the city.

A sample of venues and spaces that typically participate includes the Royal Botanic Garden’s West Gate, the Arthur Conan Doyle Centre, Bedlam Theatre, Blackwell’s Bookshop, Greyfriars Kirk, Hill Street Design House, Old Saint Paul’s Church, Parliament House Square, the Scottish National Gallery and The Queen’s Hall. Many historic churches, public squares and improvised stages throughout the city also present a diverse, constantly changing program, so you can craft an evening of comedy, drama or music to suit your tastes.

If you cannot attend during the Fringe dates, H+I Adventures runs multiple departures of the coastal Coast-to-Coast route at other times of the year, allowing riders to experience the same compelling landscapes and cycling challenges without the festival component. Whether you choose an August departure that dovetails with the Edinburgh Fringe or another date that focuses solely on the ride, the trip offers a well-organized mix of demanding trails, memorable scenery and authentic Highland hospitality.
