American Airlines Seeks Approval to Expand Service to Tokyo

American Airlines has filed applications to expand service to Tokyo Haneda (HND) from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX) and Las Vegas (LAS). The move follows a tentative agreement between the United States and Japan to open 12 additional daytime slot pairs at Haneda for U.S. carriers, enabling more convenient access to central Tokyo.

“Tokyo is an important hub for our Pacific Joint Business with Japan Airlines,” said Robert Isom, president of American Airlines. “Enhanced service at Haneda would give our customers better access to downtown Tokyo and open up JAL’s domestic network with flights to destinations like Osaka, Sapporo and Fukuoka.”

At present, American operates one daily flight to Tokyo from Los Angeles and two daily flights from Dallas/Fort Worth. The carrier’s application would add multiple daytime services to Haneda, improving schedule options for both business and leisure travelers and strengthening connectivity across the Pacific.

The carrier plans to introduce the new flights during the summer 2020 scheduling period. Equipment proposed includes Boeing 777-200 aircraft for the Dallas-originating services, and Boeing 787-8 aircraft for departures from Los Angeles and Las Vegas. These widebody aircraft are tailored for long-haul routes and offer a mix of cabin classes suitable for international travelers.

Expanding Haneda service supports American’s partnership with Japan Airlines by providing seamless connections between U.S. gateways and JAL’s extensive domestic network. Haneda’s proximity to central Tokyo makes it particularly attractive for travelers prioritizing shorter ground transfers and quicker access to the city’s business and cultural districts.

Increasing daytime frequency to Haneda also benefits onward travel within Japan. Passengers arriving on daytime flights can connect more efficiently to domestic services bound for major destinations such as Osaka, Sapporo and Fukuoka, reducing layover times and improving overall itinerary convenience.

Adding routes from Los Angeles and Las Vegas complements American’s existing transpacific footprint from the West Coast and expands options for travelers in the U.S. West and Southwest. In particular, service from Las Vegas strengthens the airport’s international offerings and creates a new direct link between the popular leisure destination and Tokyo.

American’s proposed schedule changes reflect broader industry interest in Haneda now that additional daytime slots are becoming available to U.S. carriers. While other airlines may also seek new or expanded services, American’s emphasis on connecting through its joint business with JAL highlights a strategy focused on coordinated schedules and improved transfer opportunities.

Details about exact frequencies, start dates and final approval will depend on regulatory review and bilateral slot allocation procedures between the United States and Japan. If approved, the added services would offer travelers more choices for reaching central Tokyo and for connecting onward across Japan.
