Top Five Rising Stars to Watch in Chelsea

Set on a quiet street of red-brick townhouses in Chelsea, London, the historic Draycott Hotel delivers an elegant, hard-to-top luxury stay. On arrival I was greeted by the day manager, checked in at a private desk just off the entrance hall, and escorted to the Vivian Leigh Suite, which overlooks the hotel’s Cadogan gardens. The Draycott occupies three interconnected Edwardian buildings and features 35 individually decorated, theatre-themed guestrooms and suites. A thoughtful welcome gift — a packet of handcrafted shortbread made by the hotel managing director’s wife — awaited in the room.

Draycott HotelLike many suites at the Draycott, my accommodation included a fully equipped kitchen, a gas fireplace and a generous sitting area with a desk, dining table, dressing table, sofa and comfortable armchairs. Antique Victorian wood furnishings, rich fabrics and sumptuous drapes framing the large windows sit harmoniously alongside discreet modern technology. The property focuses on delivering refined, understated luxury through a range of complimentary touches: Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, afternoon tea with homemade treats in the drawing room at 4 p.m., a glass of Champagne each evening at 6 p.m., and a rich hot chocolate delivered nightly from 9:30 p.m.

Breakfast is served in an intimate downstairs dining room, after which I spent time exploring the hotel’s public rooms, which display an intriguing collection of antiques, theatre posters and memorabilia. The buildings date back to 1890 and are located in a neighborhood with its own cultural legacy. Chelsea was once associated with the “Sloane Rangers” — well-to-do young people of the 1970s known for a distinctive style and social scene. The phenomenon was famously documented by Peter York and Ann Barr in The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook, which even featured Lady Diana Spencer on its cover before she became a princess. While few visitors will truly become a Sloane Ranger, a stay at the Draycott offers a charming way to step into that elegant slice of London life.
