Whale Watching
Grootbos is renowned as a leading whale-watching destination. Between June and December, whale season brings spectacular sightings. Guests typically start early with a hot beverage and freshly baked muffins before boarding a custom-built whale-watching boat for a close-up marine encounter.
Grootbos collaborates with a reputable sea-cruise operator for immersive two-and-a-half-hour outings into the South Atlantic. These marine adventures include visits to the large Cape fur seal colony on Geyser Rock and nearby Dyer Island, and encounters with humpback dolphins and other marine life are common.
After returning to shore, guests can join an experienced Grootbos guide for a coastal whale-watching walk. The rocky cliffs along the Dekelders coastline below Grootbos are among the finest vantage points for observing whales from land.
For an alternate perspective, Grootbos partners with a specialist operator that offers airborne whale-watching flights. With years of experience, these flights often allow guests to view dozens of whales across Walker Bay within a short flight time.
Shark Cage Diving
Grootbos also provides access to the world-famous shark-diving experiences around Gansbaai, widely regarded as a global shark hotspot. Daily boat departures from Kleinbaai Harbour take guests out to view great white sharks in their natural environment.
Participants can choose cage diving, in which divers enter a submerged cage while sharks are attracted nearby, or surface viewing for those who prefer to watch from above the water. Either option delivers a thrilling and memorable encounter with these powerful predators.
