Now that travel restrictions preventing Americans from visiting Cuba for more than three decades have been eased, major U.S. carriers are quickly adding non-stop flights between American cities and the Caribbean island.
Following JetBlue’s lead as the first U.S.-based airline to offer regular scheduled service to Cuba, American Airlines announced it would begin selling fares as well. The carrier plans five daily flights from Miami to five different destinations in Cuba, and it intends to expand service with additional daily departures from Miami. American has also announced plans to launch flights to Havana from Charlotte, N.C., and other cities across the southeastern United States.
Cuba’s largely unspoiled landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture make it a compelling destination for American travelers. The island combines classic Caribbean attractions—sandy beaches and warm seas—with historic architecture, lively music, and local culinary traditions. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking and cycling in scenic areas, while others can sample rum-forward cocktails, explore colonial streets, and discover lively markets and cultural sites.
With the reopening to U.S. tourism, travelers should expect a mix of modern conveniences and places that retain an old-world charm. Accommodations range from small family-run guesthouses to larger hotels, offering a variety of experiences and price points. Travelers should also be prepared for differences in infrastructure and services compared with typical U.S. destinations, and plan accordingly for transportation, connectivity, and local currency considerations.
As airlines expand routes and increase frequencies, access to Cuba from the United States will become more convenient. That means shorter travel times, more flight choices, and better opportunities for both short getaways and longer, immersive visits. Whether you’re drawn by cultural exploration, beach time, or outdoor activities, Cuba now offers more direct ways for Americans to experience its unique character.
