Spies, Lies & Nukes: Weekend Event at La Fonda on the Plaza, Santa Fe

Did the new film Oppenheimer spark your curiosity about international espionage? This November 10–12, you can visit the real-life backdrop of covert Cold War activity when La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe hosts a themed weekend called “Spies, Lies and Nukes.” The historic hotel once served as a retreat for Manhattan Project scientists who came to La Fonda to rest from the pressure of their secret work. To honor that history, the property’s La Fiesta Lounge will offer an Atomic Martini during the event.

The weekend is presented by former covert CIA operations officer Valerie Plame and features an impressive roster of speakers, including former senior CIA operations officer Jim C. Lawler, former senior CIA intelligence officer Jonna Mendez, former clandestine service officer Douglas London and former acting CIA director Michael J. Morell.

Sessions will cover a range of timely topics: “Inside Putin’s Head,” “China: The Empire Strikes Back,” “CIA in the Movies,” “The End of the Global Nuclear Order,” and “Soul Catcher: The Metaphysics of Recruiting a Spy.” Attendees will hear about how social media is used in modern espionage, learn details of covert operations, and explore how black market nuclear schemes operate.
