The Garland: A Cinematic Thriller That Redefines Horror

Arrival/Check-In: Flying out of a cold New York City, I landed at LAX at 5:40 p.m. Finding my Uber was a bit tricky that Tuesday evening—many fellow travelers were navigating the same challenge. The drive to the hotel took about an hour and 45 minutes, which felt reasonable given Los Angeles traffic at that hour. I arrived at The Garland and the front desk staff were friendly and efficient, getting me checked in and on my way to the room within six minutes.

Guest Quarters: I hurried to my room to drop off my bags before heading back down to The Front Yard for dinner with a colleague. We enjoyed a delicious meal and turned in early to prepare for a busy day of meetings. My “retro-cool” room was perfectly suited to a short business trip. It featured a king-sized bed, rustic white-brick walls and a bright lamp positioned near the desk. The desk offered ample space for work and for the breakfast spread I found there the next morning. Pops of bright orange, a neat bathroom shelf and mirror, and patterned curtains combined to create a nostalgic, mid-century vibe. The room also included a minibar, a roomy closet and a small balcony overlooking the pool.

Services/Amenities: The Garland’s design roots trace back to founders Beverly Garland and Fillmore Crank, who wanted to celebrate Hollywood glamour. Their son James later updated the property to blend modern comforts with the 1960s-inspired aesthetic his parents envisioned. The hotel showcases lively patterns, a pleasant pool area with hot tubs, and regular entertainment options. The recently renovated ballroom, a $1 million project by design team Forchielli Glyn, highlights technology-driven design elements and provides an elegant event space. The hotel also offers private meeting rooms and a spacious conference area for gatherings. The Front Yard, the main restaurant, doubles as room service and welcomes outside diners; it proved popular during my stay. The staff were attentive and detail-oriented—several times I returned from meetings to find thoughtful, tasty touches waiting in my room.
