Known to Spanish conquistadors as the “City of Kings,” modern Lima — Peru’s capital and main gateway — blends colonial and contemporary architecture, rich history, and vibrant local culture. Perched above the Pacific coastline, the city spans 43 districts and houses around 9 million people. Lima’s museums, lively nightlife and culinary scene tell the story of diverse civilizations and traditions. No trip is complete without sampling ceviche and a Pisco sour — the cuisine is where the city’s pulse is felt strongest. Read on for practical tips and recommendations to help plan your visit.
GETTING THERE
International flights arrive at Jorge Chávez International Airport, roughly 10 miles (about 30–60 minutes by car, depending on traffic) from central Lima. Taxis can be found inside the secure arrivals area; a trip into the city typically costs around $15. The Urbanito Airport Shuttle offers hotel drop-offs for about $8 and departs approximately every 30 minutes. Note that travelers are required to pay an exit tax of about $31 before departing the country.
GETTING AROUND
Getting around Lima can be challenging for first-time visitors. Taxis are privately operated and fares should be agreed upon before the ride; if you prefer to avoid negotiating on the street, ask your hotel to call a reputable company (many hotels use services such as Taxi Amigo). Typical downtown fares range from $8 to $15. The metro runs daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. with trains every 15–20 minutes. Micros and combi minibuses are an inexpensive option (about $1 per trip), though fares can be higher after midnight and on holidays. Many neighborhoods, especially in Miraflores and Barranco, are pleasant and walkable for short excursions.
