George R. Brown Convention Center Earns First LEED Gold Certification

Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center has earned its first-ever LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The 35-year-old facility was recognized for its sustained commitment to sustainability, efficient operations and high maintenance standards. This Gold designation reflects the convention center’s documented achievements under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system.

The George R. Brown previously achieved LEED Silver in 2011 and was recertified in 2017. LEED evaluations consider a range of sustainability measures, including energy use reduction, waste diversion, indoor air quality improvements and water conservation strategies.

“Our industry-leading entertainment and convention venues are constantly evolving to exceed expectations, and this latest accolade further solidifies our commitment to healthy and sustainable practices,” said Michael Heckman, president and CEO of Houston First, the management company that operates the George R. Brown Convention Center. “We are fortunate to have partners like Levy Restaurants and TDIndustries who work alongside us providing support and assistance so that we continue making improvements that protect and benefit our community and our future.”

A number of targeted initiatives helped reduce the convention center’s environmental impact. These include substituting compostable servingware, installing refillable water bottle stations, and launching a hydro garden program to support on-site greenery and food production. Management also coordinates with local nonprofits to redirect unserved food from events to more than 90 shelters, soup kitchens and charitable organizations, strengthening community food security while diverting waste from landfills.
