The Walt Disney Company has announced that plans to expand Hong Kong Disneyland were approved by the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
The multi-year expansion will take place from 2018 through 2023 and will introduce new attractions, entertainment and themed areas that highlight beloved Disney characters and stories. A centerpiece of the project is a Frozen-themed land that immerses guests in the kingdom of Arendelle, where visitors can meet characters from the popular film.
“Hong Kong Disneyland Resort’s multi-year expansion will leverage some of the most popular stories of the Disney brand, including Marvel and Frozen,” said Samuel Lau, managing director of Hong Kong Disneyland.
The expansion will also add a Marvel-themed area that brings iconic superheroes to life with immersive environments and character interactions. Guests can look forward to a new entertainment space called Moana’s Village Festival, which will feature a lively stage show inspired by the film’s music and storytelling. Another major element of the project is the reimagining of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, which will be updated to host new daytime and nighttime spectaculars and enhanced entertainment experiences.
Originally conceived as a roughly $1.4 billion investment, the expansion reinforces Disney’s commitment to Hong Kong Disneyland as a leading international tourist destination. The additions are designed to appeal to a wide audience across all ages, increasing the resort’s draw for families, international visitors and local guests alike.
Throughout the expansion, the park aims to blend immersive theming with modern attractions and entertainment, offering fresh experiences while preserving the charm and characters that define Disney parks. The blended lineup of Frozen, Marvel, Moana and classic Disney elements is expected to broaden the resort’s appeal and create new reasons for repeat visits.
By expanding themed lands, updating iconic landmarks and adding new live entertainment, Hong Kong Disneyland plans to strengthen its place among global Disney destinations and support long-term growth in attendance and guest satisfaction.
