Coronet, a cloud security firm, has published a study identifying U.S. airports with the weakest cybersecurity postures. The research is intended to warn business travelers about the risks of airport Wi‑Fi and the exposure of cloud-based work applications—such as Office 365 and G Suite—when devices connect to poorly protected networks.
According to the report, San Diego International Airport ranks as the most cyber-insecure, followed by John Wayne Airport–Orange County and William P. Houston Hobby Airport. At the other end of the spectrum, Chicago‑Midway International Airport, Raleigh‑Durham International Airport and Nashville International Airport were found to be among the most secure.
Coronet compiled the rankings by analyzing telemetry from 250,000 endpoints over a five-month period across the 45 busiest U.S. airports. The dataset focused on device vulnerabilities and Wi‑Fi network configuration issues, revealing common weaknesses that place travelers and their organizations at risk.
“Far too many U.S. airports have sacrificed the security of their Wi‑Fi networks for consumer convenience,” said Dror Liwer, founder and CISO of Coronet. “As a result, business travelers in particular put not just their devices, but their company’s entire digital infrastructure at risk every time they connect to Wi‑Fi that is unencrypted, unsecured or improperly configured. Until such time when airports take responsibility and improve their cybersecurity posture, the accountability is on each individual flyer to be aware of the risks and take the appropriate steps to minimize the danger.”
The study highlights both the most vulnerable and the least vulnerable airports to help travelers make informed decisions and adopt safer practices when using airport networks.
