Städel Museum Frankfurt Marks 200th Anniversary with Special Exhibits

Through Jan. 24, 2016, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, presents Masterworks in Dialogue, an imaginative pairing of iconic works that brings surprising conversations to life. Paintings such as Botticelli’s Simonetta and Rossetti’s Fazio’s Mistress are displayed side by side to provoke new readings and highlight affinities in style, subject and emotion. Created for the museum’s 200th anniversary, the installation pairs highlights from the Städel’s own collection with masterpieces borrowed from leading international institutions, forming 40 curated combinations that suggest narratives and invite viewers to explore visual relationships.

Opening Feb. 24 and running through June 5, 2016, the exhibition Maniera focuses on the great figures of Florentine Mannerism, presenting a large-scale survey of artists such as Andrea del Sarto, Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino, Bronzino and Giorgio Vasari. Coined by Vasari himself, the term maniera captures the distinctive blend of elegance, refinement and expressive individuality that defined this moment in Florentine art. The show brings together more than 120 paintings, drawings and sculptures on loan from major collections, including works from London’s National Gallery, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Madrid’s Prado and Florence’s Uffizi and Galleria dell’Accademia.

Both exhibitions emphasize fresh perspectives on familiar works: Masterworks in Dialogue encourages visitors to see connections across time and geography by juxtaposing pieces that resonate in theme or technique, while Maniera traces the stylistic innovations and personal signatures that make Florentine Mannerism a pivotal chapter in art history. Together they offer a rich program of visual storytelling, scholarship and public engagement at one of Germany’s most important museums.
