Qatar Expands Its Influence Across Africa: Investments & Partnerships

Qatar Airways is expanding its African network by adding non-stop service to Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, beginning this December. The new route will operate twice weekly between Doha’s Hamad International Airport and Asmara International Airport, using Airbus A320 aircraft configured with 12 business class seats.

Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, commented on the launch: “We are pleased to strengthen our presence in Africa with scheduled flights to Asmara, enabling us to expand our operations on the continent. There is clear demand and significant potential to and from Eritrea, which is one of several underserved markets in Africa.”

The addition of Asmara continues Qatar Airways’ strategy of growing connectivity across Africa. By introducing direct flights, the carrier aims to offer convenient travel options for business and leisure passengers, support trade and tourism links, and provide improved access to international connections through Doha’s hub.

Qatar Airways operates a modern fleet and serves more than 140 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas. The airline’s network and fleet expansion reflect ongoing investment in global connectivity and service enhancements for passengers.

Service to Asmara is scheduled to begin on Dec. 4 and will be operated with the airline’s Airbus A320 equipment, allowing travelers to benefit from dedicated business class seating and onboard service. The twice-weekly frequency is intended to match early demand while offering flexibility for travelers planning trips to and from Eritrea.

Adding new routes to underserved destinations supports economic ties and provides residents and visitors with improved access to international travel. For travelers connecting through Doha, the Hamad International Airport hub offers extensive onward connections to numerous cities worldwide, which enhances the value of direct flights between Doha and Asmara.

Qatar Airways’ decision to introduce this route underscores the airline’s focus on opening new markets and responding to passenger needs across Africa. By increasing direct services to capitals such as Asmara, the carrier contributes to broader regional connectivity and helps stimulate business, tourism and cultural exchange.

The new service complements Qatar Airways’ existing network and fleet, reinforcing its position as a major global carrier. Passengers interested in flights to Asmara can check availability and schedules directly through Qatar Airways’ official channels.
