Etihad Airways and Air Canada have announced plans for a codeshare agreement designed to strengthen connections between the United Arab Emirates and Canada. Pending regulatory approval, the partnership will allow Etihad to place its flight code on Air Canada services operating from Toronto (YYZ) to several North American cities, while Air Canada will place its code on Etihad’s non-stop Toronto–Abu Dhabi (AUH) route and on Etihad flights between Abu Dhabi and London Heathrow (LHR).
The proposed arrangement aims to improve travel options and scheduling flexibility for passengers traveling between Canada, the UAE and beyond. By adding each other’s flight codes, the two carriers can offer travelers more seamless connections and a wider range of routings under a single booking, simplifying travel planning for business and leisure customers alike.
A key benefit of the codeshare is enhanced loyalty program reciprocity. Members of Etihad’s Etihad Guest and Air Canada’s Aeroplan programs will, subject to the terms of the agreement, be able to earn and redeem miles on eligible codeshare flights. This integration of frequent-flyer benefits is intended to provide greater value and convenience for loyal customers, enabling them to combine travel across both networks while earning rewards and accessing program privileges.
Both airlines emphasize that the codeshare is contingent on obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals. Once approved, the agreement is expected to complement existing interline and alliance arrangements, improving connectivity and offering customers more coordinated schedules and through-ticketing options across the transcontinental and intercontinental markets the carriers serve.
By leveraging each carrier’s strengths—Air Canada’s extensive North American network and Etihad’s long-haul services linking Abu Dhabi and Europe—travelers should see more competitive itineraries, reduced connection times and smoother transfers at key hubs. The collaboration also supports commerce and tourism by easing travel between Canada, the UAE and destinations served via London Heathrow.
Further details, including the list of specific North American cities to be included under the codeshare and the timetable for implementation, will be shared once the airlines secure regulatory approvals and finalize implementation plans. Until then, travelers are advised to consult each airline directly for current schedules, loyalty program rules and booking options related to codeshare services.
