Britain’s exit from the European Union has not deterred United Airlines from expanding its London service. The carrier announced plans to increase frequencies on two West Coast routes to London Heathrow while adjusting capacity on its Houston link.
Starting Oct. 30, United will add a second daily nonstop flight between San Francisco (SFO) and London Heathrow (LHR), giving passengers two year-round daily options on that route. The airline will operate the SFO–LHR flights with Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, specifically the 787-8 model.
United is also boosting service from Los Angeles (LAX) to Heathrow by introducing an additional daily flight beginning April 5, 2017. Those LAX–LHR flights will be flown with the larger 787-9 Dreamliner, offering more comfort and updated onboard amenities.
At the same time, United will slightly reduce frequencies on the Houston (IAH)–Heathrow route. Effective Oct. 30, service between Houston and London will move from three daily flights to two. To minimize the impact on overall seat capacity, the remaining Houston–Heathrow flights will operate with larger Boeing 777 aircraft, so the total number of seats offered will remain close to current levels despite fewer departures.
These schedule adjustments arrive amid market turbulence following the Brexit vote, which prompted investor concerns and contributed to lower stock levels across major legacy carriers. United’s timetable changes reflect a measured response: increasing capacity on high-demand West Coast routes to London while right-sizing service out of Houston by concentrating traffic onto larger aircraft.
Passengers on the expanded SFO and LAX services can expect Dreamliner cabins that typically feature improved cabin pressure and humidity, larger windows, and modern inflight entertainment systems. Travelers on the Houston route will benefit from the enhanced seat counts and amenities available on Boeing 777 aircraft.
United’s decisions demonstrate continued investment in transatlantic travel between the United States and the U.K., maintaining robust connectivity despite broader economic and political uncertainty. The carrier’s approach balances route growth where demand is strong with capacity optimization where adjustments are prudent, ensuring reliable options for both leisure and business travelers.
