Sonoma County will see more bicycles than usual on May 8 as cyclists and environmental advocates gather for the 20th Annual Bike-to-Work Day. Staff from The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa will join thousands of area riders for the event, and anyone in the region is invited to participate.
Throughout the morning commute, Sonoma County businesses, public agencies and volunteers coordinated by the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition will operate 30 energizer stations across the county. One of these stations will be located at the employee entrance of The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn. Staffed stations offer riders complimentary coffee, juice and breakfast items and distribute 1,600 reusable canvas musette-style bags packed with event items.
“Bike-to-Work Day is a well-established community event that promotes health, environmental responsibility and local engagement,” said Rick Corcoran, general manager of The Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. Corcoran plans to bike to work and volunteer at the hotel’s energizer station. “Sonoma County serves as a national example for bicycle-friendly infrastructure and programs. In keeping with our commitment to think globally and act locally, we support hotel-based sustainability efforts that foster partnerships and educate the community about shared environmental challenges.”
The annual event highlights the benefits of active transportation, encourages commuters to try cycling, and showcases local efforts to improve biking safety and accessibility. Energizer stations not only provide refreshments but also create opportunities for participants to connect with fellow cyclists and learn about biking resources and safety tips offered by local organizations.
Participation is open to everyone, from daily bicycle commuters to those trying cycling for the first time. Riders are encouraged to arrive during morning hours to enjoy station refreshments and collect one of the reusable bags while supplies last. The event emphasizes simple, practical steps individuals and businesses can take to reduce emissions, support healthier lifestyles and strengthen community ties.
Bike-to-Work Day also supports ongoing initiatives to expand and improve cycling facilities across Sonoma County. Planners and advocates use events like this to raise awareness of needed infrastructure investments, promote safer routes, and demonstrate community demand for bicycle-friendly streets. For businesses and organizations, hosting or sponsoring energizer stations offers a visible way to show commitment to sustainability and employee well-being.
