Amtrak Integrates with Google to Enable Greener Travel Choices

Amtrak and Google have teamed up to make it easier for travelers to choose more sustainable intercity transportation. Through a new direct data integration, Google Search now displays up-to-date Amtrak departure times, trip durations, and fares directly on the results page. When a traveler selects a specific train, they can click through to Amtrak.com to complete the booking without re-entering trip details.

“One of the biggest impacts we can make towards climate change is shifting the way people get around,” said Roger Harris, president of Amtrak. “As we continue to expand services that encourage people to choose trains over cars and planes, we’re pleased this integration makes it simpler to find rail options and can help lower travelers’ carbon emissions.”

Previously, Google relied on a third-party feed to display Amtrak data in search results. With the new direct connection, Amtrak’s official schedule and fare information will appear whenever users indicate they are considering rail travel. Train options may also be suggested when travelers search for flights on Google Search or Google Flights, offering a practical and lower-carbon alternative for many trips.

Choosing Amtrak over air travel can significantly reduce a traveler’s carbon footprint. Amtrak reports that rail travel can reduce emissions by about 72 percent compared with flying for comparable routes. The company has also announced ambitious sustainability targets as part of efforts to further lower its environmental impact and promote greener travel choices.
