Delta Approved for Major LaGuardia Terminal Expansion

Delta Air Lines has received final approval to begin construction on its $4 billion, 37-gate terminal at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Board of Commissioners granted the authorization late last month.

Construction is scheduled to start this summer. The Port Authority will contribute up to $600 million toward essential support infrastructure, including an electrical substation, parking expansions, new roadways and related site work.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the project is a major milestone in modernizing LaGuardia. “The transformation of LaGuardia Airport into a state-of-the-art transportation hub is key to the economic growth and strength of the entire state,” he said, noting the terminal’s role as an economic engine and a world-class gateway for New York.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian described the approval as a critical advance for both customers and employees at one of the airline’s busiest hubs. “We appreciate the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for their continued partnership in transforming LaGuardia into the world-class airport that New York travelers deserve,” he said.

The new terminal is being designed to serve Delta’s full fleet and incorporate sustainable technologies throughout. It will include four concourses linked by a central check-in hall, security checkpoints and consolidated baggage claim areas. Passengers can expect wider concourses, increased seating and roughly 30 percent more concession space than current facilities.

A new Delta Sky Club with views of the airfield will be part of the complex, offering enhanced amenities for premium customers. Operational improvements, including upgraded taxiways, are intended to reduce delays and improve flight flow across the airport.

Overall, the terminal aims to provide a more efficient and comfortable experience for travelers while supporting long-term growth at LaGuardia. With coordinated investment from Delta and the Port Authority, the project seeks to modernize critical airport infrastructure and improve both passenger services and airline operations.
