Arrival/Check-in: Chatham Bars Inn is an ideal choice for a weekend escape from Boston. We took a relaxed drive to the Cape and even stopped for dinner at a restaurant we wanted to try. Pulling into the circular drive and climbing the broad steps onto the wraparound verandah set the tone immediately — even though we visited after Cape Cod’s high season. The old-world lobby offered a warm welcome on a mid-autumn evening. Check-in was efficient and we were on our way to our room within minutes, with one minor caveat: our accommodations were in a private cottage overlooking the ocean, close enough to see the lobby, but it required a short drive to hotel parking and a walk along a winding path with luggage. Despite that, we were very pleased with our cozy cottage. (28/30)
Guest Quarters: Our two-room cottage had an open living area with a bow window that looked out over the ocean across the street. Gas fireplaces added warmth and ambiance to both the living room and the bedroom. The spacious bathroom featured double sinks, a tub and a separate shower, and it opened to both the bedroom and living room. I claimed the walk-in closet with a vanity, though the lighting there could be improved. The French doors to the patio overlooking the ocean were a welcome feature we didn’t use because of the chilly weather, but they are a definite highlight for milder days. The only thing missing was a small kitchen area; even a nook with a sink, mini-fridge and microwave would have been a useful convenience. (27/30)
Services/Amenities: Cape Cod isn’t just a summer destination — it can be enjoyed year-round if you choose a property that feels cozy when the wind picks up, and Chatham Bars Inn fits that description. During our stay the ocean-view main dining room was closed for dinner, but the colonial-style tavern was warm and inviting on a dark October evening. Our steaks were cooked perfectly, though service was somewhat uneven because the room was filled with large conference groups. The inn hosts a robust meetings and incentive business and provides several meeting venues, including a beachfront facility and a full-service business center. There’s also a small, well-appointed spa tucked at the far end of the grounds, adding to the property’s appeal. (36/40)
The Experience: A summer stay at Chatham Bars Inn is an obvious choice for enjoying Cape Cod’s beaches and activities. For those seeking a quieter, cozy experience with crisp air and classic New England charm, plan a winter or off-season weekend to see the Cape from a different, equally rewarding perspective.
