In recognition of its role as the setting for the opening scene of William Boyd’s new James Bond novel, Solo, London’s iconic The Dorchester hotel will host an author reading on Sept. 28.
In the book’s opening pages, Bond treats himself to a birthday breakfast at The Dorchester, ordering “four eggs, scrambled with pepper sprinkled on top, half a dozen rashers of unsmoked bacon, well done, on the side and a long draught of strong black coffee.”
Starting Sept. 26, guests who quote a line from the novel when making a breakfast reservation will receive a complimentary copy of Solo or may choose an iPod narration of the book. To reflect the story’s 1960s setting, diners can also opt for a curated iPod playlist of ’60s hits and experience traditional silver service. In addition, one table selected by weekly random drawing will pay the Grill Menu’s 1969 price (approximately $2.70).
“I chose The Dorchester for James Bond to stay in because the hotel has strong literary associations but also because it was the epitome of style and glamour in the 1960s,” Boyd said. “The Dorchester was, and still is, the elite hotel — the choice of film stars and show business legends — and so it seemed fitting that when Bond wanted to give himself a special birthday treat he would book himself a room at The Dorchester.”
