Spring in Berlin: Top Spots to See the City in Bloom

April 13 marks the opening of Berlin’s first international garden show, IGA Berlin 2017. The debut event, themed “An Ocean of Colours,” highlights the natural beauty of the Wuhle River Valley, whose landscape has been thoughtfully integrated into the show’s overall design. Visitors will find a wide range of horticultural artistry created by respected landscape architects, spanning traditional garden styles to contemporary and experimental installations.

Featured attractions include the Gardens of the World, tropical hothouse displays, a dedicated rose garden, and extensive plantings of perennials and annuals that change with the season. Regional horticultural specialties are presented alongside international design concepts, offering inspiration for gardeners, landscape professionals, and casual visitors alike.

The exhibition is located in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district and introduces new visitor facilities, including a modern visitor centre and an arena with seating for 5,000. A standout offering is the on-site cable car, which provides visitors with unique aerial views across the 104-hectare site and a fresh perspective on the interplay between designed gardens and the natural river valley.

Running until October 15, the show will host more than 5,000 events throughout its duration. Programming focuses on contemporary garden design, innovative landscape architecture, immersive natural experiences, and the role of green spaces in urban environments. Workshops, guided tours, and lectures will explore topics such as sustainable planting, biodiversity, and the integration of public green areas into city life.

IGA Berlin 2017 aims to be both a celebration of horticultural excellence and a platform for ideas about the future of urban landscapes. Whether visitors come to enjoy floral displays, learn from professional presentations, or simply relax amid thoughtfully designed outdoor rooms, the event offers a diverse and engaging experience across its expansive grounds.
