Emirates Adds Dedicated Laptop Handling for U.S.-Bound Flights

Emirates has introduced a laptop and tablet handling service for passengers flying to the United States in response to the new TSA restrictions.

U.S.-bound travelers transiting through Dubai will be allowed to use their larger electronic devices during the first leg of their journey and while at Dubai International Airport, then hand them over at the departure gate. Once collected, devices will be securely packed into protective boxes, transported in the aircraft hold and returned to customers upon arrival at their U.S. destination.

“Our aim is to ensure compliance with the new rules while minimizing disruption to passenger flow and impact on customer experience,” said Tim Clark, President of Emirates. “This complimentary service gives passengers—especially those traveling for business—the flexibility to use their devices until the last possible moment.”

The free service is also available to customers who begin their journey in Dubai. However, Emirates advises passengers to place larger electronic devices in checked baggage in advance where possible to avoid delays during gate processing.

Effective March 25, the airline has assigned additional staff at Dubai International Airport to support and guide passengers through the new procedures.

Emirates emphasizes that all carry-on baggage on nonstop flights to the United States from Dubai will be subject to thorough screening. Passengers should either declare devices prior to screening or ensure they are already packed in checked luggage.

Smartphones remain permitted in the cabin. Emirates notes that most travelers use smartphones in flight—data indicates about 90 percent of Emirates passengers connect via smartphone to onboard WiFi on U.S. flights, while roughly 6 percent use laptops and 4 percent use tablets.

The electronics ban does not apply to Emirates flights to the United States that operate via Milan or Athens.
