Uber has updated its app with new safety features designed to protect riders and drivers when trips are interrupted unexpectedly. Among the additions is a discreet panic button that allows drivers to contact police quickly if they feel threatened.
The update expands Uber’s Ride Check system, which now sends alerts to both drivers and passengers when an unplanned stop occurs—whether caused by an accident or another unexpected event. The goal is to detect potential safety risks and prompt timely action when a trip deviates from normal patterns.
According to Uber, “This technology can … flag trip irregularities beyond crashes that might, in some rare cases, indicate an increased safety risk.” When Ride Check detects a prolonged or unexpected stop, it notifies both rider and driver and asks if everything is OK. Users can confirm they are safe, access the emergency button, or report the situation to Uber’s critical safety line through the app.
For drivers in the United States and Canada, Uber has introduced a Safety Toolkit that enables direct 911 calls from within the app. This feature is intended to reduce response time in emergencies by providing a faster, more convenient way to reach emergency services without leaving the app interface.
Uber is also developing voice activation capabilities so drivers can use the app hands-free. This aims to minimize distractions and help drivers keep their focus on the road while still accessing important safety features and trip controls. In addition, Uber is taking steps to protect rider privacy by hiding pick-up and drop-off addresses from drivers’ trip histories, reducing the risk that sensitive location information could be misused.
These updates reflect Uber’s broader effort to enhance safety through technology that identifies irregular trip behavior, improves emergency response options, and limits exposure of personal location data. By combining proactive notifications like Ride Check with in-app emergency tools and privacy protections, the company aims to offer both riders and drivers better protection during unexpected situations.
