Amtrak Appoints Charles W. Moorman as New CEO

Amtrak has named Charles W. “Wick” Moorman as its next president and chief executive officer. Moorman began his role on Sept. 1 and brings four decades of rail industry experience to the company. He joins Amtrak after a long tenure at Norfolk Southern Corp., where he served as chairman, CEO and president and rose through the ranks after starting as a management trainee.

A Georgia Tech and Harvard Business School graduate, Moorman is expected to guide Amtrak through a period of strategic growth and operational improvement. Anthony Coscia, chairman of Amtrak’s Board of Directors, praised the appointment, noting that Moorman’s experience and vision will be valuable as the company charts its future. Coscia emphasized that Amtrak has achieved record performance and investment under outgoing CEO Joe Boardman, with support from the Administration and Congress, and expressed confidence that Moorman can build on that progress.

The board identified several priorities for the new CEO, including initiatives to enhance safety and customer service, modernize operations, and oversee implementation of the FAST Act. These aims reflect ongoing efforts to improve Amtrak’s service reliability and infrastructure while meeting federal requirements and long-term strategic goals.

Joe Boardman announced his retirement from Amtrak this past fall after leading the company for eight years. In his farewell statement, Boardman said he felt humbled to have led the organization and looked forward to spending time with his family. He extended his best wishes to Moorman as he transitions into the leadership role.

The leadership change marks a new chapter for Amtrak as it prepares to pursue modernization and service enhancements. Moorman’s extensive industry background and executive experience are expected to support the company’s operational objectives and long-range planning, with a focus on safety, customer experience and compliance with federal initiatives.
