Silversea Launching Third Expedition Ship: What Travelers Need to Know

Silversea Cruises has announced plans to add a third expedition ship to its fleet next year. The vessel, originally launched in 1989 as Clipper Odyssey, will be renamed Silver Discoverer and will undergo a comprehensive, multi‑million‑dollar refit prior to entering service in March 2014. Designed to carry 128 passengers, the ship will be outfitted for true expedition cruising with 12 motorized Zodiac boats for shore excursions, a glass‑bottom boat for underwater viewing, and a range of onboard amenities including an outdoor grill, fitness center, spa, lounges and multiple dining venues.

Silver Discoverer will be deployed seasonally to offer remote and adventurous itineraries. In the northern hemisphere summer it will operate in the Pacific, while in the winter months it will reposition to Southeast Asia. Planned destinations include isolated and culturally rich regions across Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia, as well as select voyages to the Russian Far East, New Zealand and the Kimberley coast of Western Australia.

The ship’s small passenger capacity and extensive excursion fleet will allow Silversea to access ports and anchorages larger cruise ships cannot reach, delivering immersive experiences ashore and close encounters with natural and cultural highlights. The refit will modernize public spaces and guest accommodations while ensuring the vessel meets Silversea’s standards for service and comfort, creating an intimate expedition platform for travelers seeking off‑the‑beaten‑path destinations.

Silversea’s expansion with Silver Discoverer strengthens the line’s expedition offerings alongside its existing vessels, reinforcing a commitment to curated, high‑quality voyages that combine exploration with upscale amenities. By deploying the ship across both Pacific and Southeast Asian seasons, the company aims to provide year‑round access to diverse marine environments, remote islands and lesser‑visited coastal regions.
