Transportation/Pick-up: The Thrifty shuttle arrived just as I exited LAX, and I was quickly on my way to the Century City lot. At the Blue Chip counter I picked up a Mercedes CLK from Thrifty’s Beyond Luxury collection — a perfect test drive since I had been considering leasing one. Soon I was out of the garage with the top down, heading to Santa Monica and the Le Mérigot Hotel. (28/30)
Vehicle: I’d been eager to try Thrifty’s Beyond Luxury lineup, which has rolled out in Las Vegas and several Florida and California locations. I spent the day with a colleague in back-to-back meetings, covering ground between Santa Monica and downtown LA. The car handled city traffic easily and had enough power for smooth freeway passing and acceleration. It was also straightforward to park — a real plus in urban areas. Because it was a hot day we raised the top, and the air-conditioning, true to Mercedes form, was loud at first until the cabin cooled. The rear seat offered generous space, though we used it mainly to store presentation materials. (28/30)
Services/Amenities: Today’s rental market rarely forces you to rely heavily on roadside assistance—service and vehicle selection have improved across providers, and centralized airport rental centers have made premium distinctions less pronounced. Where the major brands still stand out is in fast turnaround. Hertz remains a strong option, but Thrifty delivers attractive vehicles at lower prices, which is compelling for budget-conscious renters. For an entrepreneur paying out of pocket, that value matters. (37/40)
The Experience: As a Thrifty Blue Chip member I accept there can be occasional issues, yet the cost savings compared with Hertz and Avis are significant. Membership lets me step up into higher classes that would otherwise be out of reach. The Beyond Luxury selection gives me the chance to work and enjoy time on the road in a polished, upscale car while keeping expenses down.
