Changi Airport Singapore: Latest Travel Updates & Terminal Info

Just in time for its 50th anniversary, Changi Airport is undertaking a series of infrastructure and passenger-experience improvements intended to meet the needs of 21st-century travelers.

In March, Changi Airport Group, the operator responsible for managing the airport, awarded a contract valued at approximately $238 million to Takenaka Corporation for expansion works at Terminal 1. Takenaka brings prior Changi experience, having participated in the Terminal 1 upgrade in 2012, Terminal 2 enhancements in 2006 and ongoing work on Terminal 4.

The Terminal 1 project, scheduled for completion in 2019, focuses on modernizing the departure check-in hall and increasing processing capacity. The upgrade includes the installation of two additional check-in positions to reduce queues and improve passenger flow. To accommodate construction, a small number of retail and dining outlets will close temporarily during the second quarter of 2015; the planned short-term disruptions will help accelerate the renovation schedule and minimize longer-term impacts on travelers.

An important technical upgrade within Terminal 1 is the transition of its baggage handling system from a semi-automatic to a fully automated operation. The new system enhances sorting accuracy and speed, enabling more efficient self check-in and bag-drop processes and reducing wait times for departing passengers. This modernization aims to streamline ground operations and improve reliability across peak travel periods.

The Terminal 1 redevelopment is being coordinated alongside the creation of Jewel Changi Airport, a mixed-use landmark being developed by Changi Airport Group in partnership with CapitaMalls Asia. Located on land previously used as an open-air parking area in front of Terminal 1, Jewel is designed to blend retail, dining, attractions, hospitality and airport-support facilities in a single integrated complex.

When it opens in late 2018, Jewel will be a multi-level destination spanning 10 stories—five above ground and five below—featuring extensive indoor landscaping and public areas. The development will include nearly 237,000 square feet of indoor planting, anchored by Forest Valley, a multi-level garden stretching across five floors and featuring thousands of trees, shrubs, ferns and waterfalls. At the center of the complex will be a dramatic 130-foot indoor waterfall that provides a tranquil daytime focal point and becomes the centerpiece of an immersive light-and-sound presentation after dark.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, branded SG50, Changi Airport has planned a year-long program under the theme “Changi, I’m Home.” The program highlights the airport’s role in the lives of Singaporeans and international visitors, and includes curated displays of historical icons and artifacts from the airport’s development. A public engagement campaign invites people to share personal memories and photos through an online photo-sharing contest, helping to document and celebrate the airport’s evolution over five decades.

Changi Airport ranks among the world’s busiest airports for international traffic and has consistently earned praise for service quality and facility design. In 2014, the airport handled a record 54.1 million passengers from around the globe, underscoring its role as a major aviation hub and a gateway to Southeast Asia.

These combined investments in terminal modernization, automated operations and the Jewel complex reflect a broader strategy to enhance passenger experience, increase capacity and create a distinct sense of place. By integrating green spaces, retail and entertainment with cutting-edge airport systems, Changi aims to deliver seamless travel experiences while offering compelling attractions for transit and local visitors alike.
