Mohonk Mountain House: Historic Hudson Valley Resort & Spa Guide

Arrival/Check-in: After driving from Pennsylvania, we reached New Paltz and followed winding roads to the resort entrance. Security checked us in at the gate, and we continued another two miles to the expansive historic hotel complex, which evokes the feel of a stately castle more than a conventional inn. Friendly bellmen met us at the porte-cochère, took our luggage and directed us to the front desk. The property’s nostalgic, Dirty Dancing–era atmosphere was evident immediately, and our bags were delivered to the rooms quickly and efficiently. (28/30)

Guest Quarters: Traveling as a party of four, we occupied two nearly identical rooms, both recently refurbished but faithful to the property’s 140-year legacy under the same Quaker family. My room featured a king-sized bed and a spacious bathroom with small hexagonal tiles, a classic tub/shower and a pedestal sink—details that reflect early 20th-century style. The Victorian Room captured the dark oak grandeur of the period and included a cozy fireplace we used during the late-fall visit. The décor encourages guests to relax and read by the fire rather than linger on modern distractions: there are no televisions. (25/30)

Services/Amenities: Mohonk’s strengths are its architecture, the lake, miles of trails and its food. Meals are a highlight: attentive service at breakfast and lunch and excellent cuisine at dinner. As a historic Quaker estate, the hotel only added a bar in recent years; it is tucked away and unobtrusive, preserving the property’s restorative focus. Dinner offers a full wine list and crafted cocktails, a contrast to the hotel’s austere origins.

The outdoor offerings are a major draw. Trails begin right outside the main buildings and range from gentle walks to challenging climbs. The Lemon Squeeze trail skirts the top of Lake Mohonk, navigating rock crevices and ladders before reaching a shelf and an old stone tower built by original owner Alfred Smiley.

One of the most memorable spots is the barn, housing an exceptional collection of Americana—carriages and sleighs used at Mohonk over the past 150 years. The display feels intimate; visitors can get closer to the artifacts than in most museums.

There is plenty more to do beyond hiking: horseback riding, boating, fishing and seasonal sports keep guests active. This estate encourages outdoor engagement rather than room-bound relaxation. I regretted not planning ahead to visit the award-winning spa, which I was unable to experience. (39/40)

The Experience: Suitable for a wide range of visitors and activity levels, this Old-World destination offers a memorable and restorative stay, combining historic charm with excellent dining and abundant outdoor recreation.
