Subterranean Berlin offers a distinctive exhibition space in the form of the Singuhr-Hoergalerie (sound gallery), housed within the historic water reservoirs of Prenzlauer Berg. This unconventional venue presents site-specific installations that explore the interplay of sound, light, motion and temperature, inviting visitors to experience art in a rare, acoustically rich environment.
On view through Sept. 22 are works by Max Eastley and Jens Brand. In the Large Reservoir, Eastley’s Aeolian Circles combines the tones of an exterior wind harp with a collection of kinetic elements positioned inside the brick-lined chamber. The result is a layered auditory environment in which natural breezes and carefully tuned mechanisms generate evolving soundscapes that mingle with the reservoir’s resonant architecture.
In the Small Water Reservoir, Jens Brand presents Raumarbeit II – Planetenmaschine nach Potocnik, part of his ongoing “world machines” series. Brand’s piece continuously documents both itself and those who encounter it, producing an ever-changing record in visual and acoustic form. The work encourages reflection on observation, surveillance and the relationship between machine and audience.
The gallery occasionally extends opening hours for special “long nights,” remaining open until midnight on selected dates to allow visitors to experience the installations in an altered temporal atmosphere. For a more in-depth visit, guided tours with curator Carsten Seiffahrt are available by reservation.
Visiting the Singuhr-Hoergalerie is not only an opportunity to engage with contemporary sound art but also to appreciate how unusual architectural settings shape perception. The combination of historic infrastructure and experimental practice makes these exhibitions particularly compelling for anyone interested in sound-based art, immersive installations and the technological and environmental conditions that influence artistic experience.
