Munich Airport Trials Automated People Mover Train System

Media and industry leaders recently tested Munich Airport’s new personal transport system (PTS), an automated train that connects Terminal 2 with the newly opened infield satellite. The PTS replaces shuttle buses and provides a fast, reliable link between the two facilities, simplifying transfers and reducing transit times for passengers.

The train runs through a tunnel originally constructed during the development of Terminal 2 nearly 14 years ago. That tunnel was designed to hold two tracks and currently supports three trains composed of 12 cars each. The system operates at a modest speed of just over seven miles per hour, with each car accommodating more than 90 passengers. Together, the trains can move up to 9,000 passengers per hour in each direction.

Thomas Winkelmann of Lufthansa said, “Passengers will travel between Terminal 2 and the new satellite facility in less than a minute. That represents a major improvement in comfort and convenience.” He added that the satellite includes five new Lufthansa lounges and 27 additional pierside boarding gates, enhancing the passenger experience and streamlining operations.

The automated PTS is designed for frequent, efficient service to meet the airport’s growing demand, improving connections for travelers and supporting smooth aircraft turnaround at the expanded terminal complex.
