The first experience of its kind in Dublin, it is set within Ireland’s oldest university and supports the Old Library Redevelopment Project. The presentation takes place in a specially constructed pavilion on the historic Trinity grounds and complements the permanent displays inside the library.

Visitors begin with a viewing of the Book of Kells in the Old Library, followed by a visit to the Long Room, widely regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful and historically significant libraries. From there, guests enter the pavilion for a 360-degree immersive presentation that blends sight, story and sound inspired by the ancient manuscript and the Old Library’s precious holdings.

The pavilion experience includes an innovative digital reconstruction of the Long Room, offering perspectives that enhance appreciation of the space and its collections. It also highlights other books and manuscripts from the Old Library’s historic archives, placing the Book of Kells within a broader cultural and scholarly context.

The exhibition recreates historical moments and introduces visitors to figures connected to the library’s collections. Guests can experience a 1916 soundscape featuring the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, encounter sculptural representations of literary figures such as Jonathan Swift and William Shakespeare, and trace the architectural evolution of the Long Room from its 1732 origins to today.

Trinity College will announce the opening date for The Book of Kells Experience soon; updates will be posted on the college’s official visitor pages. The new installation aims to broaden public access to these rare materials while preserving the physical manuscripts through careful display and conservation.

The Book of Kells itself is an illuminated Latin Gospel book containing the four Gospels of the New Testament. Dated to around A.D. 800, the manuscript takes its name from the Abbey of Kells, where it was kept for centuries. The new experience will allow visitors to engage closely with the manuscript’s artistry, context and historical significance in ways that preserve the original while expanding understanding for modern audiences.
