El Hierro, the smallest and most remote of Spain’s Canary Islands, has been recognized as the “Smartest Island in the World” thanks to a recent island-wide WiFi initiative.
The project established 26 strategically placed WiFi hotspots across the island, covering key towns, visitor centers and major tourist attractions. Each hotspot is clearly marked with signage in Spanish, English and German so residents and visitors can find and use them easily. To simplify access, users can install the official mobile app, El Hierro Te Sigue, which shows the exact locations of all free hotspots and helps connect to the network.
Designers took care to preserve the island’s natural beauty: many WiFi antennas are discreetly integrated into the environment using natural materials such as volcanic rocks so they blend with the landscape instead of disrupting it.
This combination of broad connectivity, multilingual support and sensitive design aims to improve visitor experience and local quality of life while respecting El Hierro’s distinctive scenery.
