Air Arabia Launches Second Direct Route to Sri Lanka

Air Arabia has expanded its Sri Lanka network with a new non-stop route to Hambantota International Airport (HIA) in Mattala, which began on March 18. Initially launched as a twice-weekly service between Sharjah (SHJ), United Arab Emirates, and Mattala, the airline plans to increase frequency to four weekly flights from May 19.

This new Mattala link complements Air Arabia’s existing Sharjah–Colombo (CMB) operations. The Colombo route currently runs nine times per week, with daily departures and additional flights on Tuesdays and Fridays, strengthening connectivity between the United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka.

By adding Hambantota to its schedule, Air Arabia provides more options for travelers and supports growing demand for direct connections to southern Sri Lanka. The expanded frequencies offer greater flexibility for leisure travelers, business visitors, and the Sri Lankan diaspora, making it easier to access both Colombo and Mattala through Sharjah.

Airlines typically adjust frequencies based on demand, seasonality, and market conditions. Increasing services to Mattala reflects confidence in passenger demand and the strategic value of serving alternative airports outside a country’s main hub. For travelers, the additional flights can reduce travel time, improve availability during peak periods, and offer convenient connections through Sharjah’s airport.

Passengers planning to travel on these routes should check Air Arabia’s official schedules and booking channels for the latest flight times and any fare options. As with any route expansion, availability and timings may be updated, so confirming details before travel is recommended.
