Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center Spa at National Harbor, MD

Lying face down on a comfortable massage table, eyes closed and drifting to a calming New Age playlist as the therapist expertly worked on a stubborn knot in my upper back — almost certainly brought on by long hours at my laptop — I had a single thought: “Why here?”

This was one of the finest massages I’d ever experienced. Yet I wasn’t in a coastal resort town or a well-known spa destination.

The answer was visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows: the Potomac River. I was in Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital — and a prime source of tension.

Relâche Spa sits inside the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center on the Maryland side of the Potomac, minutes from the bustle of the District. Gaylord built this expansive property — 2,000 hotel rooms and 470,000 square feet of meeting space on 41 acres at National Harbor — to serve conventions and leisure travelers alike. Recognizing the need for restorative downtime, the resort created one of the largest spas in the Capital Region.

Relâche, which means “relax” or “respite” in French, caters to everyone from busy politicians and conference attendees to vacationing families. The spa’s brochure even nods to history, noting that the word “spa” comes from a Belgian town where Roman soldiers once sought hot springs to soothe their aches and wounds — an apt parallel given the pressures of Washington life.

My 24-year-old daughter and I arrived with decompression on our minds. I was immersed in a book project; she was in her second year of a Ph.D. program. Both of us welcomed the chance to slow down.

Despite the Gaylord National’s grand, ocean liner–inspired lobby, 18-story atrium and expansive convention facilities, Relâche offers a calm refuge. Tucked into a corner on the lobby level, the spa reception is modern and chic, with a striking black-and-white palette and a zebra-striped marble floor that sets an elegant, slightly playful tone.

From the moment we checked in, the staff were warm and professional. They guided us through the women’s changing rooms and shower area, well stocked with complimentary hair and skin products. Separate facilities are available for men.

Inside our sleek white locker we found plush terry robes and slippers, which we wore to the water-view waiting area. The room continued the black-and-white design: modern lounge chairs, button-accented pillows and a serene, minimalist aesthetic. Lemon-infused water and white tea were available as we settled in and prepared to unwind.

We had booked the “A Moment Together” massage, a side-by-side treatment designed for duos — couples, friends, mothers and daughters, or any pair wanting a shared experience. Our two therapists escorted us to the Couples Suite, where matching massage tables awaited.

The suite overlooks greenery, the river, a marina and, from one window, the Washington Monument. The view alone encourages deep breathing, but it was the soft covers and the quiet privacy that truly began to slow our breaths.

Our therapists were the embodiment of discretion. They spoke only in hushed tones and communicated with subtle gestures when necessary. Lighting and music were balanced perfectly to support relaxation without plunging the room into darkness. My daughter and I slipped easily into a peaceful, almost wordless state.

The “A Moment Together” experience allows guests to choose Swedish, aromatherapy or sports massage, but we surrendered to the therapists’ judgment. In addition to focused muscle work I requested, the treatment included hot towels, warmed, husk-filled neck pillows and gentle stretching reminiscent of Thai techniques. Everything felt deliberate and restorative. The 50-minute session passed quickly, leaving us both feeling refreshed and lighter.

After the massage we lingered in the river-view relaxation room, where the décor matched the waiting area and refreshments — lemon water, white tea, fruit and cookies — were offered. We exchanged slow, satisfied smiles.

Not ready for the experience to end, we took advantage of terry covers provided by staff and visited the spa’s thermal suite (women-only; men have a separate area). My daughter preferred the steam room over the super-hot Jacuzzi, while I enjoyed the bubbling soak and the way it melted the last of my tension.

Relâche’s menu includes 50- and 80-minute massages, a range of scrubs and wraps, hydrotherapy options, facials, and skin treatments tailored for men as well as women. The spa also offers manicures, pedicures and combined packages. One example, “The Ensemble,” pairs a petite facial, manicure and the Relâche Signature Massage into a 120-minute package — ideal for a busy professional seeking efficient, thorough pampering.

Guests can also use the resort’s extensive amenities: a large, 24-hour fitness center with up-to-date equipment and an indoor junior Olympic–sized pool that opens to the outdoors in warmer months.

Before leaving the spa, take a moment to look across the Potomac. From this vantage point, the District appears unusually peaceful — a fitting end to a restorative visit.
