Frontier Airlines Passengers Join in Viral Harlem Shake on Flight

Passengers on a recent Frontier Airlines flight appear to have taken the pilot’s line “You are now free to move about the cabin” a little too literally. After the plane reached cruising altitude, one passenger stood up and began dancing in the aisle. Within seconds, others joined in, and the cabin turned into a high-flying version of the Harlem Shake.

The dancers included members of Colorado College’s Ultimate Frisbee team, who were traveling to a tournament in San Diego. They say flight attendants gave them permission to stage and videotape the performance. The Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing the incident to verify that the aircraft was at a safe altitude and that seat belt signs had indeed been switched off when the dancing began. Frontier Airlines has confirmed the seat belt signs were not illuminated.

Although the clip is entertaining and appears to show many passengers — not only the Ultimate Frisbee players — taking part, aviation safety experts have raised concerns. Sudden turbulence can cause serious injuries when people are standing or moving in the cabin, and unsanctioned group activity onboard can complicate crew duties and security procedures. Authorities also note that allowing passengers to congregate in the aisle could present risks in other scenarios.

Adding an ironic footnote, Frontier’s own crew had recorded their own version of the Harlem Shake a few weeks earlier, highlighting how quickly a lighthearted idea can spread. The incident serves as a reminder that while spontaneous moments aboard flights can be memorable and fun, maintaining safety and following crew instructions remain the top priorities for everyone on board.
