Thompson Hotels is expanding to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Commune Hotels + Resorts and Thor Urbana, together with design firm ICRAVE, will develop the Thompson Playa del Carmen on the Yucatán peninsula. Scheduled to open in 2015, the property is planned as a 300,000-square-foot mixed-use hotel and beach club featuring shopping, nightlife, dining, 90 guest suites and a rooftop pool. It will be unique in combining direct beachfront access with a prime central location on Fifth Avenue in the heart of the city.
The design targets travelers who favor a cosmopolitan, nomadic lifestyle, blending sleek contemporary elements with lively, energetic public spaces. The new Thompson will balance refined luxury with locally inspired, handcrafted finishes to reflect the region’s character.
Thompson Hotels already operate in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto and London. The brand is recognized for modern design, vibrant social spaces and a focus on style-driven hospitality.
